Rating System

  • Ratings vary for different types of shots. Each shot is unique (I hope) so each one DESERVES to be rated uniquely. Do not expect the same level of judgement for a shot of a flower as well as that of a person. (For those who don’t know, I rate your pictures out of 10)
  • First Impression is critical. Before I see the toning, framing etc etc. of the shot I try and register the initial feeling that hits me when I first see the shot and this is the base for the rating.
  • I will tend to rate a People shot higher than most because I feel that those are the toughest to take. For further detail on this matter check Dirty Looks. BUT don’t be dissuaded……. Never compromise personal style just to try and impress the critic. Phil Bebbington constantly posts shots of these vertical cement-y structures called WALLS and constantly gets 8+ from me.
  • I will not emphasise much on photo processing here because there are so many styles. Just keep experimenting, it’s what improves your editing skills.
  • Originality scores big points with me. Any shot that’s risque (doesn’t necessarily mean nudity) or out of the box appeals to me. I’m generally open-minded and like anything new that comes my way. Remember, small things like changing angles can make your shot original.
  • Your POSTS COUNT. I DO READ (unless I really really can’t) whatever you write. Photography is all about presentation and if you can set a good mood through text there’s no reason why your image won’t score.
  • Consistency is the best tool for the long run. If you post well consistently (sadly, I don’t fall into this category) my respect for you goes up ten-fold and I learn to appreciate your work even more.
  • I LOVE association. If you can relate your shot to an anecdote, a message or just tell me what the image means to you the shot becomes more than just a bunch of pixels. I give marks for the underlying currents.
